Thrust 2: |
Leveraging on the Economic
Corridors
To
achieve sustainable economic
growth for the nation in the
next decade, the Malaysia
government has implemented
several long-term regional
development master plans such as
the Iskandar Development Region
(IDR), the Northern Corridor
Economic Region (NCER), the East
Coast Economic Region (ECER) and
the Sabah-Sarawak Economic
Region. The ultimate objectives
of these master plans are to
boost the economy and increase
the income of all Malaysians as
well as to improve the
socio-economic conditions in
Malaysia’s rural areas and
less-developed states. These
development plans are to be
implemented in stages and will
extend through a period of ten
to twelve years, in conjunction
with the implementation of RMK9,
RMK10 and RMK11.
The launch of the Economic
Corridors is a strategy aimed at
ensuring that economic planning
and development reach
communities where resources are
needed most. This
decentralisation of power and
resources is a key factor in
achieving improved economic
efficiency. However, it also
means that implementation of
policies will be conducted at
the state and/or local level.
This requires good governance.
As such, the whole nation, and
in particular, the local
business community, must be
sensitive to such changes and
adapt to them in order to remain
relevant in mainstream economic
activity.
Likewise, local community
leaders will increasingly be
expected to play an effective
role in ensuring that the
members of the community are not
marginalised or alienated in the
course of nation building.
MCA, through all its state EXCO
members, will play an active
role in facilitating
co-operation between the various
business sectors and government
agencies, both at the federal
and state level, to help
business development and
economic progress in their
respective states. MCA will
bring together all Chinese-based
associations to participate in
various projects in the
different economic regions while
exploring joint ventures with
other communities that leverage
on the respective strengths of
each community.
MCA is committed to ensuring
that all communities benefit and
achieve progress in line with
the growth of these economic
regions. SMEs will have to learn
how best to work together to
form strategic alliances in
order to approach MNCs. By
creating an inherent economic
value through such alliances,
our SMEs will be able to be
directly involved in these
Economic Corridors. The
important role of SMEs in
helping to accomplish the
objectives of the development
corridors is undeniable since
SMEs are the ‘backbone’
supporting the supply chain. For
example, we have witnessed how
SMEs have grown and benefited
from their involvement and
collaboration with MNCs in
developing the electrical and
electronics industry in Penang.
