Malaysia Economic Highlights - Mei 2008

   Economic Growth Rate - GDP

In the first quarter of 2008, Malaysia economic remained resilient with the real GDP registered a growth of 7.1%.

All major sectors of the economy registered positive growth. On the supply side, the Services sector continued to be the main catalyst to the growth, followed by the Manufacturing sector which recorded 8.0% and 6.9% respectively. 

   Balance of Payments - Current Account

The Current Account Surplus for the period of the last three months of 2007 was RM26.2billion, as compared to RM29.5 billion in the third quarter.

The Estimated Current Account Surplus  is RM98.3 billion* for the year 2008.

   Net International Reserves

The net international reserves for the month of April 2008 recorded an increase of 25.4% to RM396.6 billion. The value for the same month in 2007 was RM316.2 billion.
 
  Exports, Imports and Balance of Trade 

  • Malaysia's Exports for the first quarter of 2008 valued RM151.7 billion rose by 9.8% in comparision with RM138.1 billion for the same quarter in 2007.
     
  • Imports increased by 6.7% for the first three months of 2008 from RM117.1 billion to RM124.9 billion as compared to the same period last year.
     
  • Malaysia registered a Trade Surplus for the above referred period was RM26.8 billion.

  Industrial Production Index  (2000=100)

The Industrial Production Index (IPI) for the first quarter of 2008 continued to strengthen at 5.6% to 138.4 points compared to 131.0 points in the corresponding quarter of 2007.

All components that posted gains namely Manufacturing 6.4%, Electricity 4.5%, and 3.7% in Mining.

  Consumer Price Index (2005=100)

The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January-April 2008 added 2.7% to 107.9 points compared to 105.1 points for the same period in year 2007. 

Notable among these increases are those main components with high weights namely Food & Non-Alcoholic Beverages (4.7%), Housing, Water, Electricity, Gas & Other Fuels (1.4%) and Transport (0.9%).

  Producer Price Index (2000=100)

The Producer Price Index for January - April 2008 added 10.0% to 140.3 points compared to 127.5 points for the same period in 2007.

The expansion was in line with the positive change in Mineral Fuel/Lubricants & Related Materials component at 33.2%. Minor components such as Animal & Vegetable Oils & Fats registered highest percentage change of 58.7%.

Others - Crude Oil

  • Production of crude oil for January - April 2008 registered a increase of 5.5% to 85.53 million barrels compared with the production in the same period of pervious year at 81.06 million barrels.
     
  • The average price of crude oil per barrel in January-April 2008 increased by 49.2% to RM103.08 per barrel for the same period of previous year.
  • Price recorded for April 2008 was US$105.67per barrel.
